The Santos Degollado Theater is a mid-nineteenth century building, it is famous for its beautiful paintings along its golden walls inside the building and its symbolic relief on the outside. It is located in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. The building is a regular venue for recitals, concerts, classical and contemporary dance performances. It is also the headquarters of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.

This building is located on Degollado Street, in the historic center of the city of Guadalajara, in front of the Plaza de la Liberación. It is considered one of the most emblematic buildings, and “the most important artistic work of the XIX century in Guadalajara”.

The first inauguration of the theater was on September 13, 1866, with the opera Lucia de Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, starring Angela Peralta, an opera soprano known as “the Mexican nightingale”. The theater had not yet been completed. Subsequently, there were many remodeling works and four more inaugurations, on October 30, 1880, September 15, 1910, June 28, 1941 and September 8, 1964.

Currently, it is home to the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco, the International Mariachi and Charrería Encounters, the Folkloric Ballet of the University of Guadalajara, the Guadalajara City Hall Ballet and the stage for concerts, opera, classical ballet, plays and presentations of outstanding national and international artists.
